“Ruling on Giving Zakat Money to Poor Cancer Patients“

Date: 22/2/1427 AH, corresponding to 22/3/2006 AD.

Question:                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                            What is the Sharia ruling on giving the Zakat money to  (Sandooq Al-Khair), which is dedicated for providing assistance to poor cancer patients  who can`t afford the expensive treatment, or whose treatment isn`t covered by any party?

Answer:

The Board is of the view that the above is permissible provided that the Zakat funds are deposited in a separate account dedicated for helping those patients, so as for these funds not to get mixed with other funds. This is based on what the Prophet (PBUH) said to Mu`adh (May Allah be Pleased with him) when he appointed him as governor of Yemen. Ibn 'Abbas (May Allah be pleased with them) reported: The Prophet (PBUH) appointed Mu'adh (May Allah be pleased with him) as governor of Yemen, and at the time of his departure, he instructed him thus: "First of all, call the people to testify 'La ilaha illallah' (there is no true god except Allah) and that I (Muhammad) am the Messenger of Allah, and if they accept this (declaration of Faith), then tell them that Allah has enjoined upon them five Salat during the day and night; and if they obey you, tell them that Allah has made the payment of Zakat obligatory upon them. It should be collected from their rich and distributed among their poor." [Agreed upon]. And Allah Knows Best.

Summarized Fatawaa

A young man who works for a conventional bank has proposed to me. Is it forbidden to marry him because he works there?

All perfect praise be to Allah the Lord of the Worlds. May His peace and blessings be upon Prophet Mohammad and upon all his family and companions.
Since the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) said: "When someone with whose religion and character you are satisfied asks your daughter in marriage, accede to his request. If you do not do so there will be temptation in the earth and extensive corruption."
Marrying such a person is permissible because he is a Muslim, and Allah may bless him with another job in which no usury/interest is involved. And Allah The Most Exalted Knows Best.

After I was ran over, I had cracked ribs, concussion, a tension pneumothorax, and retired as a result. What is the amount of the Diya?

All praise is due to Allah the Lord of the worlds. May the blessings of Allah be upon our Master and Prophet Muḥammad and his pure progeny.

What you have mentioned requires a detailed medical report since the benefit of every organ that you have lost deserves a full Diya (In Islamic law, Diya is the financial compensation paid to the victim or heirs of a victim in the cases of accidental murder, bodily harm or property damage). Moreover, the decrease in the benefit of some organs has to be assessed by expert doctors and allocated a percentage from the Diya accordingly. Therefore, we advise you to refer the matter to the courts or reconcile with the driver and forgive him so that Allah may forgive you. And Allah The Almighty Knows Best.
