Question :

Is the loose, plain-colored, non-ornamented Islamic hijab merely a traditional custom of the Arabs in the past? Moreover, is it correct that any garment covering the entire body is considered Islamically acceptable as hijab, even if it is decorated?

The Answer :

All perfect praise be to Allah the Lord of the Worlds. May His peace and blessings be upon Prophet Mohammad and upon all his family and companions.

Islamic law encourages modesty and decency and mandates every sane, adult Muslim woman to observe hijab in the presence of non-mahram (Marriageable) men. This is based on the words of Allah the Almighty {which mean}:" O Prophet! Tell thy wives and daughters, and the believing women, that they should cast their outer garments over their persons (when abroad): that is most convenient, that they should be known (as such) and not molested. And God is Oft- Forgiving, Most Merciful.” [Al-Ahzab/ 59].

And His saying: "And say to the believing women that they should lower their gaze and guard their modesty; that they should not display their beauty and ornaments except what (must ordinarily) appear thereof; that they should draw their veils over their bosoms and not display their beauty except to their husbands, their fathers, their husband’s fathers, their sons, their husbands’ sons, their brothers or their brothers’ sons, or their sisters’ sons, or their women, or the slaves whom their right hands possess, or male servants free of physical needs, or small children who have no sense of the shame of sex; and that they should not strike their feet in order to draw attention to their hidden ornaments. And O ye Believers! turn ye all together towards God, that ye may attain Bliss.” [An-Nur/31].

Islamic law does not specify a particular garment that must be worn to the exclusion of all others. Rather, it sets certain conditions that must be met for any garment to be considered Islamically acceptable. If these conditions are fulfilled, the garment is permissible. These conditions are as follows:

1-The garment must cover the entire body except the face and hands.

2-It must not be decorative in itself, such that it attracts attention or provokes notice, in accordance with the verse: “that they should not display their beauty and ornaments” [An-Nur: 3].

3-It must not be thin or transparent to the extent that it reveals what is beneath, as the purpose of clothing is concealment. Transparency not only fails to achieve this but may also increase temptation and attraction. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: AbU Huraira reported Allah's Messenger (PBUH) having said this: "Two are the types of the denizens of Hell whom I did not see: people having flogs like the tails of the ox with them and they would be beating people, and the women who would be dressed but appear to be naked, who would be inclined (to evil) and make their husbands incline towards it. Their heads would be like the humps of the bukht camel inclined to one side. They will not enter Paradise and they would not smell its odour whereas its odour would be smelt from such and such distance. [Sahih Muslim]

4-It must be loose and not tight, as tight garments outline the shape of the body, which leads to undesirable consequences.

5-It must not resemble the clothing of men, in accordance with the saying of the Prophet (peace be upon him): "Those women who imitate men are not from us, nor are those men who imitate women.” (Musnad Ahmad)

In conclusion, if any garment fulfills the above conditions, it is permissible to wear, regardless of its name, color, or design. However, if any of these conditions isn`t met, the garment is not Islamically acceptable and may not be worn.We remind Muslim women to be mindful of Allah in their choice of clothing, to fear Him, and to avoid being a source of temptation or inciting desires. And Allah the Almighty knows best.
