Question :

What is the ruling of Islamic Law on launching an initiative that encourages the purchase of local products? Could such an initiative cause division among Muslims or hinder the sale of non-domestic products?

The Answer :

All perfect praise be to Allah, The Lord of The Worlds. May His peace and blessings be upon our Prophet Muhammad and upon all of his family and companions.

A strong economy is a fundamental pillar for achieving true independence and avoiding dependency. It is also essential for establishing social peace and security. For this reason, one of the first actions undertaken by the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) upon his arrival in Medina was the establishment of a market where Muslims could trade, replacing the market previously dominated by the Jews. This was to liberate the community from Jewish monopolistic control over commerce. Furthermore, he encouraged agriculture and earning through one’s labor, emphasizing cooperation in goodness. Allah the Almighty says {what means}:“Help ye one another in righteousness and piety, but help ye not one another in sin and rancour: fear Allah. for Allah is strict in punishment..” (Al-Maidah/2)

Therefore, it is important to support national products and local industries, as they contribute to strengthening the country’s economy. Such support promotes the advancement of the national economy and encourages merchants and manufacturers to improve their products.

Initiatives that encourage the purchase of local products are not a call to division, nor do they hinder non-domestic products. Non-domestic products remain available for sale and marketing; they are not obstructed. Promoting local products does not imply disparagement of other products, and competition remains the fundamental principle.

In conclusion, there is no objection to launching initiatives that encourage the purchase of local products, as they represent cooperation in goodness. Such initiatives are not, in any way, a call to division or an obstruction of non-domestic products. And Allah the Almighty knows best.
