Question:

What is the ruling on what was mentioned on the recording attributed to Sheikh AbdulMajeed Al-Zandani as Regards the life of Barzakh (Barzakh: a partition, a bar or barrier; the place or state in which people will be after death and before Judgment. Cf. xxv. 53 and Iv. 20. Behind them is the barrier of death, and in front of them is the Barzakh, partition, a quiescent state until the judgment comes.)?

The Board has listened to the above recording attributed to Al-Zandani, claiming that the “Barzakh” mentioned in the verse: “In order that I may work righteousness in the things I neglected." - "By no means! It is but a word he says."- Before them is a Partition till the Day they are raised up.”{Al-Mu`minun/100} exists in the deep layers of earth at 2000 degree Fahrenheit equal to a third of the Sun`s heat, and that the disbelievers are tortured in this Barzakh based on the following verses: “Day! Surely the record of the wicked is (preserved) in Sijjin.” {Al-Mutaffifin/7}, “Do ye feel secure that He Who is in heaven will not cause you to be swallowed up by the earth when it shakes (as in an earthquake)?{Al-Mulk/16}, and “Because of their sins they were drowned (in the flood), and were made to enter the Fire (of Punishment): and they found- in lieu of God- none to help them.” {Nuh/25}.

He founded his  claim on the fact that a Russian team has reached a deep underground layer engulfed with flames, and that they sent down a device parallel to the vibrations of the human ear, and that it recorded sounds of human beings being tortured. He also claimed that Sijjin is the core of the earth engulfed with fire,  the Earth`s violent commotion is the movement of its underground layers,  the fire in which the disbelievers fell is the Barzakh, and that the sounds of torture recorded by the Russian team belong to the disbelievers.

After the Board has listened to the above recording, it deemed the following:

1- From the view of language, Barzakh is the barrier between two things and its meaning in the verse: “Before them is a Partition till the Day they are raised up. “ {Al-Mu`minun/100}, according to exegesis, is: “a partition, a bar or barrier; the place or state in which people will be after death and before Judgment. Cf. xxv. 53 and Iv. 20. Behind them is the barrier of death, and in front of them is the Barzakh, partition, a quiescent state until the judgment comes.” And it is amongst the unseen matters, only known to Allah, and proofs of it are audio, so we believe in them as they were transferred to us from the Quran and the Sunnah.

2- The interpretation of Barzakh mentioned in the recording deviates completely from the principles observed in Quranic interpretation, and so it isn`t acceptable.

3- The above interpretation is invalid and the evidences given don`t support what that person has claimed, because he has interpreted unseen matters which are only known to Allah: Barzakh life, torture in the grave, Hell, Heaven and Resurrection, and we are commanded to believe in them  as they are prescribed in Islamic Sharia since they aren`t tangible and their evidences are based on correct transfer.

Therefore, it is strange for Al-Zandani to interpret (Sijjin) mentioned in the verse: “! Surely the record of the wicked is (preserved) in Sijjin“ {Al-Mutaffifin/7} as the underground layers engulfed with flame, for it is a record in which the deeds of the disbelievers are preserved, and it is clearly written.

It is also strange that he interpreted the verse: “Do ye feel secure that He Who is in heaven will not cause you to be swallowed up by the earth when it shakes (as in an earthquake)?”{Al-Mulk/16}, as the movement of the underground layers, for it shows the greatness of Allah`s Powers in causing the earth to swallow up the disbelievers when it shakes, and whenever He wants to inflict torture upon them. The same applies to his interpretation of the verse: “Because of their sins they were drowned (in the flood), and were made to enter the Fire (of Punishment): and they found - in lieu of God- none to help them.” {Nuh/25} as the underground fire, for the punishment of disbelievers mentioned in this verse is due on The Day of Resurrection.

As regards basing his opinion upon the work of the above mentioned Russian team, it requires an independent scientific verification, and when proven, it requires scientific explanation and analysis, so it is impermissible to be adopted as an evidence to project weird concepts on the Book of Allah The Almighty,  pertaining to unseen matters that rest upon correct transfer from Divine Revelation. And Allah, The Almighty Knows Best.

What is the ruling on bypassing a nearby mosque for a distant one?

Praise be to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon our Master, the Messenger of Allah.

If a distant mosque has a larger congregation (Jama‘ah) while the congregation in the nearby mosque is smaller, and the congregation in the nearby mosque is not adversely affected by the worshiper's absence, then it is better for him to pray in the distant mosque with the larger congregation. However, if the congregation in the nearby mosque would be affected by his absence—such as if he is its Imam, or if his presence encourages others to attend—then praying in the nearby mosque is better. This ensures that the congregation is established in two different locations within the community. This is based on the saying of the Prophet ﷺ: 'A man's prayer offered with another man is purer than his prayer which he offers alone, and his prayer with two men is purer than his prayer with one and if they are more (in number), it is more beloved to Allah, the Mighty the Majestic' (Narrated by Ahmad, Abu Dawood, and An-Nasa'i). And Allah the Exalted knows best.

What is the expiation for perjury?

One who commits perjury should repent, seek Allah`s forgiveness and offer an expiation which is: feeding ten indigent persons, or clothing them, or giving a slave his freedom, but if that is beyond his means then, he should fast for three days. Allah, The Almighty, Says in this regard (What means): "Allah will not call you to account for what is futile in your oaths, but He will call you to account for your deliberate oaths: for expiation, feed ten indigent persons, on a scale of the average for the food of your families; or clothe them; or give a slave his freedom. If that is beyond your means, fast for three days. That is the expiation for the oaths ye have sworn. But keep to your oaths. Thus doth Allah make clear to you His signs, that ye may be grateful." [Al-Ma`idah/89].

Is it incumbent on the fiancée to obey her fiancé?

When the woman settles in her husband`s house, it is incumbent on him to provide for her and it is incumbent on her to obey him. Before that, and if the marriage contract had been concluded, then she is lawfully his wife and thus she should abide by custom in treating him, but if the marriage contract hadn`t been concluded, then she should treat him as a non-Mahram (Marriageable).

What is the ruling on someone who dies while having missed fasts?

● If a person dies before having the opportunity to make up the missed fasts—such as someone whose excuse (e.g., illness) persisted until their death—then no makeup fast (qada), fidyah, or sin applies to them.
● However, if they had the ability to make up the fasts but did not do so before passing away, the missed fasts must be compensated by giving a mudd of food for each missed day from their estate.
The Prophet ﷺ said: "Whoever dies while having a month’s fast due, one needy person should be fed per day on their behalf." [Narrated by At-Tirmidhi]
Additionally, a guardian (wali) may fast on their behalf, as the Prophet ﷺ said: "Whoever dies while having missed fasts, their guardian should fast on their behalf." [Narrated by Al-Bukhari and Muslim]
In another narration: "If they wish." This indicates that both feeding the needy and fasting on behalf of the deceased are permissible options.
