About the General Fatwa Department

The Fatwa Department of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan was founded in 1921. Since its formation, it has relied upon Hanafi fatwas which were in use during the Ottoman era, and the Mufti has answered the questions of members of the public, whether they relate to worship or financial transactions or personal statutes, and it has assigned a mufti to each judge in cities both large and small. I suffer from chronic asthma which requires ventoline inhale; which is an air causes the risperatory track/airways to expand. Am I permited to use it during the daylight of Ramadan? And does break one's fast? Noting that I can't go an entire day without using it?

Taking inhaler through the mouth or the nose breaks one's fast, because it is meant to reach the lungs which are part of the coelom. Therefore, whosoever use inhalers for couple of days is obliged to preserve his fasting and make up that day later. As for the ones the ones who need to use it every days are obliged to preserve his fast and feed a poor per day and the cost of feeding one poor is estimated (60) piasters for the year (1421AH). And Allah Knows Best.

Is the marriage, which lacks a valid legal contract, a guardian, and a court registration, valid?

It is incumbent that a valid marriage contract be concluded in the presence of a guardian and two trustful witnesses, and it should be registered in the court to protect the rights of the wife. Actually, a valid marriage contract is what differentiates between sound marriage and fornication.

Is abortion permissible when the family isn`t ready to receive a new baby?

Abortion is forbidden unless it constituted a serious threat against the mother`s life based on the opinion of trustful and God fearing physicians.

Is it permissible for a woman to conclude her marriage without the approval of her family?

No marriage is permissible without the presence of a guardian and two trust worthy witnesses, and the woman whose family had denied her right in getting married to a God-fearing, financially and physically capable man should go to the court.

Is it permissible for the woman to use her mobile phone while on the street?

Modesty should be observed by the woman at all times, so she is free to use her phone while on the street as long as it is done within the limits of Islamic manners. And Allah The Almigty Knows Best.

Is it permissible for a person to give the Zakah (obligatory charity) to his daughter-in-law?

Yes, it is permissible for a person to give the Zakah to his daughter-in-law if she was poor, and none provided for particularly by whom are obliged to provide for her. And Allah Knows Best.

What is Aqeeqah?

It is the sheep slaughtered on the seventh day from the child`s birth, and it is a confirmed Sunnah after the Prophet (PBUH).

Is it permissible for a Christian man to embrace Islam in secret and is it permissible for a Muslim woman to marry him?

Praise be to Allah the Lord of the Worlds. May His peace and blessings be upon our Prophet Mohammad and upon all his family and companions.

His embracing Islam in secret is between him and Allah; however, it isn`t permissible for a Muslim woman to marry him except after he declares his Islam and it is ascertained that he is sincere about that. And Allah The Almighty Knows Best.
