About the General Fatwa Department

The Fatwa Department of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan was founded in 1921. Since its formation, it has relied upon Hanafi fatwas which were in use during the Ottoman era, and the Mufti has answered the questions of members of the public, whether they relate to worship or financial transactions or personal statutes, and it has assigned a mufti to each judge in cities both large and small. What should one who forgot to offer the second Sajda during congregational prayer, and remembered it before the end of the prayer do?

All perfect praise be to Allah, The Lord of The Worlds. Whoever forgets a pillar of prayer while in congregation must follow the lead of the Imam, and after the latter offers Tasleem, he should offer one Rakah, then perform Sujood As-Sahw (prostration of forgetfulness). And Allah Knows Best.

Is it permissible to add the nutmeg to one`s food?

Using a little bit of the nutmeg for seasoning is permissible, but using a great deal of it is impermissible since it could lead to intoxication, and Islam has forbidden all intoxicants and stupefacients. And Allah Knows Best.

What is the Islamic ruling regarding a person finding buried treasure, whether gold or artifacts, and what is their share of it?

If the buried treasure is Islamic, it is considered Luqta (lost property), and the finder must announce it to locate its owner. If all efforts to find the owner fail, the finder may take ownership of it. If the treasure is non-Islamic and consists of gold or silver, zakat must be paid on it, which is one-fifth of its value. Is Lease-to-own through Islamic Bank Permissible?

The General Iftaa` Department celebrates along with all Jordanians the Anniversary of the Royal Accession to the Throne and takes pride in all the gains achieved since the founding of the kingdom until now. It takes this opportunity to congratulate His Majesty King Abdullah II on the twentieth anniversary of his accession to the throne. In the meantime, it stresses that it is the duty of every citizen to preserve and take part in the advancement of our country at all levels.

Moreover, the Iftaa` Department confirms that it hasn`t recently issued a statement regarding patriotic songs and calls on media to avoid using the religion for unprofessional incitement during such significant national occasions.

Does touching one's wife invalidate ablution?

Touching the wife according to the Shafi'ee's doctrine invalidate husband's ablution. And Allah Knows Best.

Does Istigfar (Asking Allah for forgiveness) between the first and the second part of Friday prayer`s sermon render the prayer invalid?

Talking during Friday prayer`s sermon is disliked, but there is no harm in offering Istigfar between the two parts of the sermon, and it doesn`t invalidate the prayer as it is actually from Sunnah. And Allah Knows Best.

I am a woman, and my natural menstrual cycle lasts six days. In the evening, I perform the testimony (Tashahhud) for myself, and then I engage in sexual intercourse with my husband. After intercourse, I experience bleeding, either immediately or the next day. Is my intercourse with my husband during this time forbidden?

It seems that your menstrual cycle lasts seven days, not six. Therefore, you should wait until the bleeding stops, then perform ghusl and pray. And Allah Knows Best.

Is it incumbent on a husband to pay the alimony of his wife if she had left him and stayed at her parent`s without his permission?

When a wife leaves her house, and stays at her parent`s without asking her husband, she is considered a Nashiz (wife who refuses to abide by her husband’s orders), and so she doesn`t deserve an alimony.
