The Honest Military Model; His Grace Sheikh AbdulKareem Al-Khasawneh

I have no personal relationship with this venerable Sheikh for I have met him once. However, I wanted to write a brief article about him for a couple of reasons. First, highlighting the bright side of Jordan in terms of the public officials who are passionate about its common good. Second, acquainting the reader with this strong, professional character, which is calm in appearance but strong in action. Third, having listened to this charismatic religious leader on the morning radio show "Nawafith."

Although in his eighth decade, this white-bearded, open-faced Sheikh delivers the tasks entrusted to him properly and accurately; not merely sufficing with the reports of his aides.  He also oversees twenty-four Iftaa` offices, which receive hundreds of questions and issues hundreds of answers (Fatwas), located in various districts and governorates of the kingdom. On its own, the General Iftaa` Department follows up and monitors every issue, big or small, circulated via social media, news websites or transmitted by people in their meetings. Definitely, the ruling of Sharia on these is required and must be based on scientific knowledge, the know-how, careful consideration of people`s conditions and the projection of contemporary reality, with all its consequences, on the validity of the Muslim faith for every time and place. This way, it is made sure that the produced Fatwa is fortified against dubiousness and human whims.

In terms of staff, the Iftaa` Department is based on the work and diligence of forty Muftis who keep track of the various administrative as well as socio-economic matters; some of which could reach up to tens of hundreds of pages. They are also in charge of issuing delicate Fatwas that will have a deep, serious impact on life on the level of the individual, group, and community.

The Iftaa` Department receives multiple questions about different topics, such as sale contracts, commercial transactions, and social affairs where askers go in person seeking answers for the latter. This is in addition to issues the Dept. addresses on its own to ward off moral and social corruption.

Actually, it is worth pointing that the Iftaa` Dept. was classified as the first Iftaa` institution during the Corona pandemic, was a key reference in this regard and its fatwas were translated into five languages to serve Muslims all over the world. Moreover, the cooperation between the Department and its counterparts in some Muslim countries is clear evidence on the depth as well as the outstanding quality of its Fatwas.

Taking a closer look at the Department`s high level of professionalism and its tremendous efforts over the past years indicate that it is led by a wise, disciplined, military figure of world class. This is normal because graduates of the military school are of such refined and rare caliber where professionalism comes with discipline, precision, and follow up. Accordingly, Sheikh Abdul Kareem is a living example of this type.

Based on this, will such figures be called to hold sensitive positions that need, in addition to honesty, strength and military discipline?!

We pray that Allah protects His Majesty King Abdullah II, his family, and the people of Jordan.

Summarized Fatawaa

What is the difference between Tahajjud prayer and night prayer, and do they have a particular Witr prayer other than that of Isha (evening prayer)?

Tahajjud and Qiyam-Al-Lail (night prayer) are two words for the same meaning which is offering voluntary prayer at night after sunset, but before dawn break. However, Tahajjud is offered after waking up; whereas, Qiyam-Al-Lail is permissible before sleeping, or after it. Therefore, every Tahajjud is a Qiyam, but not every Qiyam is a Tahajjud. Moreover, there is no specified Witr for both of them, but Witr after Isha is by itself the Witr of Qiyam, and it is a Sunnah to postpone it until after Qiyam if the worshiper thought that he was most probably going to wake up in order to offer it, but if he wasn`t sure of waking up, then he is at liberty to offer it before going to bed as was reported in the Prophet`s Hadith.

I have vowed that if Allah gave me what I wanted so bad, I would fast every Monday and Thursday to the rest of my life; unless there is a valid excuse hindering me from doing so. Fortunately, Allah gave me what I wanted, so I started fasting Mondays and Thursdays; however, I stopped out of laziness. What is the Sharia ruling on this?

All perfect praise be to Allah the Lord of the Worlds. May Allah`s peace and blessings be upon our Prophet Mohammad and upon all his family and companions.
Allah The Almighty described the righteous people of Jannah where He Said (What means): "They perform (their) vows, and they fear a Day whose evil flies far and wide." [Al-Insan/7]. Accordingly, you must do your best to fulfill your vow. However, if you are unable to do so, then feed a poor person for every missed day of fast (About half a JD), and if you are unable to do that, then offer expiation for breaking a vow, which is feeding ten poor Muslims (About half a JD for each), ask Allah for forgiveness and increase remembrance of Him. And Allah The Almighty Knows Best.

What is the ruling on the unification of Adhan?

All perfect praise be to AllahThe Lord of The Worlds, and may His peace and blessings be upon our Prophet Muhammad and upon all of his family and companions.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                  The unified Adhan is an act of Sunnah performed on behalf of a city's population. In addition, any Masjid that doesn’t have a Mua'than (The person who calls for prayers) and doesn`t raise the Adhan misses the reward of this great act. This is because Adhan should be raised for every group of people. However, the unified Adhan should be called in one Masjid and heard through all other Masjids. And Allah Knows Best.

I`m married to an American citizen who used to be married to a man in Mexico and filed for divorce there. It is worth pointing that in America she isn`t registered as married. When she arrived in Jordan, her lawyer called and told her that she got the divorce, and based on this we got married in Jordan. What is the ruling of Sharia on this?

All perfect praise be to Allah the Lord of The Worlds. May His blessings and peace be upon our Prophet Mohammad and upon all his family and companions.

You haven`t mentioned whether this woman has converted to Islam or not. If she had embraced Islam and three menstrual cycles passed, but her first husband hasn`t converted to Islam, then her relationship with him is over. If you married her after this (Passing of three menstrual cycles and first husband not having embraced Islam) then your marriage is valid. However, if she didn`t convert to Islam then your marriage contract with her is invalid and you have to wait until she gets divorced by her first husband and observes Iddah, which is three menstrual cycles. Afterwards, you can conclude the marriage contract. We pray that Allah doesn`t hold you to account for what you have done because you thought she was divorced. We recommend that you seek Allah`s forgiveness as much as you can and do righteous deeds. We also advise you to marry a Muslim woman to preserve your and your children`s religion since Almighty Allah Says (What means): "Wed not idolatresses till they believe…" [Al-Baqarah/ 221]. It is true that marrying a Kitabi (One who believes in a book of sacred scriptures and with whom a Muslim may marry in what is deemed a lawful marriage) is permissible, it involves great risks, as stated in the aforementioned verse. And Allah The Almighty Knows Best.
