Question :

What is the ruling of Sharia on a woman mixing with her male relatives unnecessarily and without the approval of her husband? This is in addition to her being taught by a male relative in the presence of her twelve-year old son while wearing he Hijab. She does all of this without telling her husband although she knows that he doesn`t approve of it.

The Answer :

All perfect praise be to Allah the Lord of the Worlds. May His peace and blessings be upon our Prophet Mohammad and upon all his family and companions.

It is unlawful for the woman to disobey her husband with regards to his rights on her. The greatest of these is preserving herself and chastity in his absence. Thus, she can`t mix with men he told her not to mix with and she can`t do things that he doesn`t approve of concerning her modesty and decency. Basically, she had better not commit any unlawful thing that he disapproves of since this involves a double right: right of Allah and right of husband. In other words, such a thing entails a severer sin.

Al-Hussaien Bin Muhsin narrated that his paternal aunt went to ask the Prophet (PBUH) about something. After he (PBUH) answered her question, he (PBUH) said to her: "Are you married?" She said, "Yes". He (PBUH) said to her: "How are things between you?" She said: "I spare no effort to please him." He (PBUH) said: "Beware of your relationship with him for he is, indeed, your paradise and Hell." {Related by Ahmad}. And Allah The Almighty, Knows Best.
