The Prophet's Birthday is a School for Raising the Younger Generation

 

The commemoration of the Prophet's noble birth is an opportunity to sow the seeds of love and familiarity with the Messenger of Allah in the hearts of the younger generation, especially children. For it is human nature to love those who have done good to them, to follow role models, and to seek practical examples to emulate.

In addition, the noble birth of the Prophet is an opportunity for parents and educators to highlight the prophetic model in all its depths, manifestations, greatness, morals, mercy, and attributes. This is done by discussing his blessed biography, dealings, and skills.

Moreover, the first steps are to sow the seeds of love and attachment to him, peace be upon him, and to increase the reading of his biography, speaking about him, and sending blessings upon him. These matters give birth to love, as it has been said: "Whoever loves something, mentions it often." Furthermore, love represents the second part of the Shahada, "I bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah."

Love is a sign of complete faith. The Prophet, peace be upon him, said: 'None of you truly believes until I am dearer to him than his father, his son, and all of mankind.' This love and following his example, peace be upon him, serve as a strong shield against being carried away or imitating improper role models in society.

We can outline a simple, concise methodology or work plan within our celebration of the Prophet's noble birth to achieve the goals, meanings, and secrets of this great commemoration, and to establish a spiritual and heartfelt connection between the generation and the one whose birth is being commemorated, peace be upon him. For example:

Exalting this commemoration and the virtue of this day, and explaining the virtue of the Prophet, peace be upon him, that he is the chosen Prophet and a mercy to all the worlds. Allah Says (What means): "Say, "In the grace of Allah and in His mercy – in that let them rejoice. It is better than anything they accumulate." [Yunus/58].

This is in addition to the importance of attending celebrations held in mosques and centers, which include guidance, chanting, and an atmosphere of joy and companionship with the one being commemorated.

Moreover, engaging competitions can be held, including questions about the Prophet's biography, with encouragement through the distribution of prizes and both material and moral incentives.

Another practical step that is suggested is to encourage children to frequently send blessings upon the Prophet, peace be upon him, explaining the great reward for that in both the worldly life and the hereafter. Moreover, encouraging those who send blessings upon him frequently with a material reward, even if small, instills a spirit of competition in doing good deeds. In addition, spending generously on one's family on this occasion reinforces the meaning of love and attachment to the Prophet's noble self.

The occasion of the Prophet's noble birth is a delightful station, a clear and distinguished opportunity that cannot be surpassed; for it derives its greatness from the one being commemorated. It is a means of cultivating love and affection and framing the meanings of friendship and kindness in the hearts of the generation. The goal is to connect the generation with the one being commemorated. Moreover, it is the responsibility of the educator to find the means to achieve these goals. And all praise is due to Allah, The Lord of The Worlds.

Our Master the Prophet ﷺ said: 'It is more excellent for a woman to pray in her house than in her courtyard, and more excellent for her to pray in her private chamber than in her house.' Therefore, a woman’s adherence to her home and her refraining from going to the mosques—in obedience to the command of Allah the Exalted—attains a great reward and abundant recompense. Furthermore, women praying in congregation within their homes is better than their attendance at the mosques, based on the aforementioned Hadith. And Allah the Exalted knows best.

Is it permissible to give to the poor from among the People of the Book from the Udhiyah?

It is permissible to give to the poor among the People of the Book from a voluntary sacrifice (uḍḥiyyat taṭawwuʿ), just as it is permissible to give charity (ṣadaqah) to them. This opinion is a view (wajh) within the Shāfiʿī school, which was favored by al-Muḥibb al-Ṭabarī and Imam al-Nawawī. [See: Ḥāshiyat Ibn Qāsim al-ʿAbbādī ʿalā Tuḥfat al-Muḥtāj (Vol.9/P.365)]. What is the meaning of the Prophetic statement that a boy is held in pledge (murtahan) for his 'aqīqah?

All praise is due to Allah, and may peace and blessings be upon our Master, the Messenger of Allah.
The first interpretation: That if the boy dies in infancy without an 'aqīqah having been performed on his behalf, he will not intercede for his parents on the Day of Resurrection. This is the position of Imam Aḥmad ibn Ḥanbal, and Imam al-Khaṭṭābī concurred with him, stating: "The finest of what has been said regarding this matter is the position adopted by Aḥmad ibn Ḥanbal." — [Fatḥ al-Bārī by Ibn Ḥajar,{Vol.9/P.594]
The second interpretation: That the child is likened to a pledged object (marhūn) — one from which full benefit and enjoyment cannot be derived until it is redeemed. A blessing is only made complete upon the one blessed when they fulfil the obligation of gratitude (shukr), and the prescribed expression of gratitude for this particular blessing is what the Prophet ﷺ established as Sunnah — namely, the slaughtering of the 'aqīqah on behalf of the newborn as an act of thankfulness to Allah the Almighty and as a supplication for the wellbeing and safety of the child. What is the wisdom behind legislating the Udhiyah?

The Muslim must know that through the Uḍḥiyah, he complies with the command of Allah, the Exalted, and performs a worship that brings him closer to Allah and distances him from the Fire.
 
The Uḍḥiyah holds profound wisdoms and noble meanings, including:
 
1-Reviving the Sunnah of Abraham, peace be upon him: He complied with Allah's command when He ordered him to slaughter his son Ishmael. Abraham, peace be upon him, succeeded in the test, and when he was about to slaughter his son, Allah sent down a ram to ransom Ishmael and commanded him to slaughter it instead. Allah, the Exalted, says {what means]: "And when he reached with him [the age of] exertion, he said, 'O my son, indeed I have seen in a dream that I [must] sacrifice you, so see what you think.' He said, 'O my father, do as you are commanded. You will find me, if Allah wills, of the steadfast.' And when they had both submitted and he put him down upon his forehead, We called to him, 'O Abraham, You have fulfilled the vision.' Indeed, We thus reward the doers of good. Indeed, this was the clear trial. And We ransomed him with a great sacrifice." [Al-Ṣāffāt/102-107]. Thus, the sacrificial offering became an enduring Sunnah until the Day of Judgment, and Muslims offer their wealth as sacrifices, drawing closer to Allah, the Exalted, reviving this great Sunnah.
 
2-Providing abundance for people on Eid day and the Days of Tashrīq: Among the wisdoms of the Uḍḥiyah is that the Muslim provides generously for his family, neighbors, relatives, and the poor during these days. The Muslim is encouraged to eat from his sacrifice, give charity from it to the poor, and gift from it to his wealthy neighbors. Thus, goodness spreads throughout the entire community. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "The Days of Tashrīq are days of eating and drinking." (Narrated by Muslim). Allah, the Exalted, says {what means}: "And the camels and cattle We have appointed for you as among the symbols of Allah; for you therein is good." [Al-Ḥajj/36]. This good includes the good of both this world and the Hereafter.
