The Fatwa Department of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan was founded in 1921. Since its formation, it has relied upon Hanafi fatwas which were in use during the Ottoman era, and the Mufti has answered the questions of members of the public, whether they relate to worship or financial transactions or personal statutes, and it has assigned a mufti to each judge in cities both large and small. It is permissible for a mother to give her children from zakat if they are eligible to receive it, even though she is obligated to provide for them. This is based on the saying of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) regarding Zainab, the wife of Abdullah Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with them): "Your husband and your children are more deserving of your charity" [Al-Bukhari]. And Allah Knows Best.

The Iftaa` Department Condemns the Terrorist Incident in Sri Lanka

The General Iftaa` Department condemns the cowardly terrorist incident that targeted a group of churches and hotels in Sri Lanka, which resulted in the loss of innocent lives, attacks on places of worship, and intimidation of safe people. This horrible act contradicts with the higher objectives of Islamic Law as well as all divine laws. It also contradicts with the provisions of Islamic law which aim to enhance peace and security, stop bloodshed and protect places of worship. Such cowardly acts targeting worshippers and places of worship contribute in spreading hatred amongst people and create obstacles amongst them, which keeps them in a state of continued struggle instead of cooperation for the good of humanity.

The Department extends its deepest condolences to the families of the victims and wishes a speedy recovery to the wounded.

We ask Allah to protect Jordan from every evil and bless it with continued peace and security.

Moreover, it is prohibited for any woman, or girl to get involved in a relation with a non-Mahram (Marriageable man).

Couples should advise one another in kindness, and the wife can stop her husband from committing sin by resorting to a kind and tactful approach.

Is it permissible to use the term 'Al-Jalalah' (Majesty) for anyone other than Allah, The Exalted?

In the Arabic language, a man of dignity and reverence is described as 'Jaleel' (noble), and similarly, an elder or a woman of dignity may be described as 'Jaleelah'. In such contexts, one may use the title 'His Majesty' or 'Her Majesty.' However, the Majesty of Allah, The Exalted, is unlike the majesty of humans, just as His hearing is not like our hearing, and His sight is not like our sight. And Allah The Almighty Knows Best.

Is Iddah (waiting period) incumbent on an old woman whose husband had died?

Upon the death of the husband, Iddah is incumbent on the wife regardless of their age. And Allah Knows Best.
