Question :

What is the ruling on the wife who curses her husband or his family and the one who curses Allah?

The Answer :

All perfect praise be to Allah, The Lord of The Worlds, and may His peace and blessings be upon our Prophet Mohammad and upon all his family and companions.

Basically, the relationship between spouses should rest on love, mercy and tranquility. In fact, this relationship constitutes the foundation upon which happiness and family are based. This is because Allah, The Almighty, says: " And among His Signs is this, that He created for you mates from among yourselves, that ye may dwell in tranquillity with them, and He has put love and mercy between your (hearts): verily in that are Signs for those who reflect."{Ar-Rum, 21}. Marital disputes should be defused with kindness and mutual understanding since negligence and verbal abuse aren`t permissible in Sharia.  The Messenger of Allah (PBUH) said, "A true believer is not involved in taunting, or frequently cursing (others) or in indecency or abusing." [At-Tirmidhi]. He, peace be upon him, also said, "A person utters a word thoughtlessly (i.e., without thinking about its being good or not) and, as a result of this, he will fall down into the fire of Hell deeper than the distance between the east and the west." {Bukhari}.

Moreover, it isn`t permissible for any of the spouses to attack or curse the other; rather, he/she should deal kindly because the Prophet (PBUH) said, " The best of you is the best to his wives, and I am the best of you to my wives, and when your companion dies, leave him alone." [At-Tirmidhi].

As regards cursing Almighty Allah, it is a major sin that a true God-fearing Muslim isn`t likely to commit. Therefore, such a person must make sincere repentance immediately, ask for forgiveness and revert to Islam by uttering the testimonies of faith. Concerning the validity of that person`s marriage contract, according to the Hanafie school of thought, it is tied with his reverting to Islam. If he reverted before the end of Idda (waiting period observed by woman due to divorce or husband`s death), then the contract remains valid, but if he didn`t, then the contract is invalidated. Later on, if he repents, reverts to Islam, and decides to return his wife, he must make a new contract and give a new Maher (Bridal gift).

In conclusion, we advise the above spouses to treat each other kindly, fight the evil suggestions of the devil and avoid whatever leads to animosity and hatred. And Allah knows best.
