Question :

In the event of grief and loss, is it permissible to say "O Allah! Compensate me with Reward and Better Substitute"?

The Answer :

All perfect praise be to Allah the Lord of the Worlds. May His peace and blessings be upon Prophet Mohammad and upon all his family and companions.

It is recommended for a Muslim to abide by the invocations narrated after the Prophet (Peace and blessings be upon him) at all times. This is because the Prophet (Peace and blessings be upon him) used to say: "O Allah, I seek refuge in you from grief and sadness, from weakness and from laziness, from miserliness and from cowardice, from being overcome by debt and overpowered by men (i.e. others)." {Related by Bukhari}.

Umm Salama reported God’s messenger as saying, “If any Muslim who suffers some calamity says what God has commanded him, ‘We belong to God and to Him do we return ; O God, reward me for my affliction and give me something better than it in exchange for it,’ God will give him something better than it in exchange." {Related by Muslim}.

However, there is no sin in invoking Allah with other invocations so long as they don`t violate Sharia. A famous one is: "O Allah! Compensate me with Reward and Better Substitute." If, by this invocation, a Muslim means to ask Allah to compensate him in his affliction or relieve his distress, then this is permissible. And Allah the Almighty Knows Best
