About the General Fatwa Department

The Fatwa Department of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan was founded in 1921. Since its formation, it has relied upon Hanafi fatwas which were in use during the Ottoman era, and the Mufti has answered the questions of members of the public, whether they relate to worship or financial transactions or personal statutes, and it has assigned a mufti to each judge in cities both large and small. What is the ruling of Sharia on marrying a Jewish woman, dealing with the Jews, and going to Israel?

All perfect praise be to Allah the Lord of the Worlds. May Allah`s peace and blessings be upon our Prophet Mohammad and upon all his family and companions.

It is allowed for a Muslim to marry a Jewish or a Christian woman provided that this doesn`t affect his religion. As for dealing with the Jews who are outside Palestine, it is the same as dealing with the Christians; it is permissible as long as it doesn`t harm Islam. As for dealing with the Jews who are inside Palestine, the ruling differs depending on the persons themselves and the situations. By the end of the day, a believer`s heart leads him/her to what is good. And Allah The Almighty Knows Best.

Is it allowed to use ants as part of a prescription to remove extra hair?

This isn`t allowed because animals shouldn`t be killed unless they are harmful or slaughtered to be eaten. And Allah The Almighty Knows Best.

If husband doesn`t pray, but wife does, is their marriage contract considered valid or not?

Not observing daily prayers is a grave sin, but doesn`t invalidate a person`s marriage contract. However, we advise you to save your husband from hellfire by convincing him to observe the prescribed prayers. And Allah The Almighty Knows Best.

Is it permissible for a person to sever ties with his sister because her husband had quit prayer and done him harm?

A sister is a blood-relative and maintaining blood-relations is obligatory in Islam. As regards her husband, he should be invited to the way of Allah with wisdom and beautiful preaching.

What is the ruling on not offering prayer in a nearby mosque, and going to a distant one?

Praying in the nearby mosque takes precedence unless there was a circle of knowledge, or a larger congregation in the distant mosque provided that the congregational prayer in the nearby mosque isn`t undermined. And Allah Knows Best.
