Question :

What is the ruling on performing Tawaf using an escalator-like machine where a pilgrim is carried around the Kaba without having to make any physical effort? It is worth pointing that there is a study for making this Tawaf escalator-like machine for the old people.

The Answer :

All perfect praise be to Allah the Lord of the Worlds. May His peace and blessings be upon our Prophet Mohammad and upon all his family and companions.

 

According to authentic Hadith, the Prophet (Peace be upon him) performed Tawaf (Circumambulation around the Kaba) upon his mount. Jabir Ibn Abdullah (May Allah be pleased with him) narrated: "The Prophet performed Tawaf upon his mount, so when he arrived at the (Black Stone) corner, he pointed to it." If there is  a machine that a pilgrim could ride and takes him/her around the Kaba, then his/her Tawaf is valid. However, this electric escalator-like machine shouldn`t change the visual features of Al-Masjid Al-Haram and it should be dedicated to the old and sick pilgrims. And Allah The Almighty Knows Best.
