Question :

During work, I sustained an injury and was classified as medically grade four. Then, I went to another doctor and was classified, through favoritism, as medically grade five. Am I sinful for this, and am I required to give charity equivalent to the financial difference of grade five?

The Answer :

All perfect praise be to Allah the Lord of the Worlds. May His peace and blessings be upon Prophet Mohammad and upon all his family and companions.

A Muslim must adhere to honesty in both words and actions and must avoid lying and deceit. Allah The Almighty has commanded us to uphold truthfulness, as He Says (What means): "O you who have believed, fear Allah and be with those who are truthful." [At-Tawbah/119]. Our beloved Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) also encouraged us to make truthfulness our way of life, saying: "Adhere to truthfulness, for truthfulness leads to righteousness, and righteousness leads to Paradise. A person continues to speak the truth and strive for truthfulness until he is recorded with Allah as a truthful one. And beware of lying, for lying leads to wickedness, and wickedness leads to the Hellfire. A person continues to lie and strive in lying until he is recorded with Allah as a liar." [Moslim].

It is obligatory to adhere to the regulations and instructions related to medical classification. Lying and deceit to obtain a certain benefit are not permissible. Upholding the command of Allah The Almighty takes precedence over gaining any worldly benefit.

Therefore, if the medical classification was obtained through forgery and deceit, it is considered sinful. The benefit derived from the money gained through such means is prohibited, and the classification obtained through favoritism should be amended if possible. If it is not possible to amend the classification, the excess money must be returned to the responsible authority. If that is not feasible, the excess should be returned to the state treasury for public interests. And Allah The Almighty Knows Best.
