Question :

What is the ruling on building a hall to be rented for holding different social events and wedding receptions? This is taking into consideration the fact that many violations of Sharia take place during these events; however, we will include a number of Sharia conditions upon signing the rent contract. Does doing so clear us from liability before Almighty Allah as we have no authority to ban any violations of Sharia?

The Answer :

All perfect praise be to Allah the Lord of The Worlds. May His blessings and peace be upon our Prophet Mohammad and upon all his family and companions.

The ruling of Sharia on halls used for holding different parties and wedding receptions depends on what happens in these events. Therefore, if the hall is used for sin, then this is prohibited and considered helping in sin and rancor. But, if it is used for holding weddings and other parties while observing the rules of Sharia, then it is lawful and its revenue is lawful and blessed, in addition to helping in piety and righteousness. This is since such hall is a form of investment that is beneficial to society and an investor is rewarded for. However, this is provided that he/ she seeks to please Allah through helping people and providing them with a venue for their different occasions for reasonable price. This way, two objectives are achieved: Lawful investment and Serving society. Allah the Almighty says {What means}: " Help ye one another in righteousness and piety, but help ye not one another in sin and rancour: fear Allah. for Allah is strict in punishment." {Al-Ma`idah, 2}.

In order for this project to be lawful, the following rules of Sharia must be adhered to:

First: There is no mingling between men and women and no uncovering of private parts.

Second: No forbidden foods or drinks are served.

Third: No songs, which celebrate sin and provoke desires, are played.

If these rules are adhered to, then there is no sin to proceed with this project. If not, then you may not go ahead with it. In addition, the owner of the hall may write down, in the rent contract, conditions that are considerable in Sharia and meet the above rules. And Allah the Almighty knows best.
