About the General Fatwa Department

The Fatwa Department of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan was founded in 1921. Since its formation, it has relied upon Hanafi fatwas which were in use during the Ottoman era, and the Mufti has answered the questions of members of the public, whether they relate to worship or financial transactions or personal statutes, and it has assigned a mufti to each judge in cities both large and small. Does the date for menstrual menses change, and how is the increase calculated?

If the bleeding lasts no less than (24) hours, but doesn’t exceed (15) days, and the purity interval between the two menses is no less than (15) days, then it is menstruation even if the date of menses changes, or its duration increases.

What is the ruling of Sharia on a Muslim woman who committed Zina with a Christian and became pregnant as a result?

Abortion is forbidden in Islam as it entails taking the life of a soul unjustly. Rather, it is one of the major sins; however, it is permissible only when there is well-established danger on the mother`s life; in which situation scholars gave priority to her life over that of the foetus, since this is, according to Sharia: "The lesser of two evils". In case a Muslim woman committed Zina (Adultery) with a Christian and got pregnant, if this did happen, then this question should be presented to the Iftaa` Committee with the presence of the questioner herself. She could also ask a reliable scholar face to face or via phone. If she gives birth to the baby, then he/she is a Muslim and takes the name of his mother; not the name of the man who was a reason for its conception. And Allah The Almighty Knows Best.

For passing time, my friends and I have called a famous diviner. She told me that somebody had cast a spill on me not to get married for the rest of my life. I didn`t believe her, but I can`t forget her words. How can I protect myself from such thing?

Praise be to Allah the Lord of the Worlds.

Dealing with diviners is forbidden and what you are suffering from is due to your having consulted that diviner. Have trust in Allah and ask Him for forgiveness, but rest assured that whatever Allah has decreed will take place. And Allah The Almighty Knows Best.

The General Iftaa` Department celebrates along with all Jordanians the Anniversary of the Royal Accession to the Throne and takes pride in all the gains achieved since the founding of the kingdom until now. It takes this opportunity to congratulate His Majesty King Abdullah II on the twentieth anniversary of his accession to the throne. In the meantime, it stresses that it is the duty of every citizen to preserve and take part in the advancement of our country at all levels.

Moreover, the Iftaa` Department confirms that it hasn`t recently issued a statement regarding patriotic songs and calls on media to avoid using the religion for unprofessional incitement during such significant national occasions.

Is it permissible for us to sever ties of kinship if our blood-relatives` gatherings/meetings involve acts of sin?

Observing kinship ties is obligatory, and paying your blood-relatives a visit causing their sinful acts to be hindered , then you should do so. However, if their sinful acts continue while you are at their gathering and they didn't respond positively, then observing kinship ties via telephone and the like will suffice in this case. Is Zakah due on a woman`s deposited gold?

Zakah (obligatory charity) is due on deposited gold if it reached Nissab (minimum amount liable for Zakah), and a lunar year had lapsed over owning it. The due Zakah is (2.5%). And Allah Knows Best.

Is washing both openings (Istinjaa`) a must before every ablution?

Washing the front and back openings (Istinjaa`) is a must in case they have an impurity, but if they do not, there is no need for that, and Istinjaa` is not a condition for the validity of ablution.

An engineer has to work in a circuit system of a non-Islamic bank. What is the ruling on the income she receives from doing this job?
