Question :

Should the words of the Athaan be repeated after the Iqaama as well?

The Answer :

All perfect praise be to Allah, The Lord of the Worlds, and may His peace and blessings be upon our Prophet Mohammad and upon all his family and companions. According to Prophetic narrations, it is permissible to repeat the words of the Athaan upon hearing it pronounced and to say the supplication(O Allah, Lord of this perfect call………) that comes after it, and this includes the Iqaama as well since both(Athaan and Iqaama) are a call to prayer and an Athaan. It was narrated that Jabir said: "The Messenger of Allah (PBUH) said: 'Whoever says, when he hears the call to prayer: "Allahumma rabba hadhihid-da'wat it-tammah was-salat il-qaimah, ati Muahmmadan al-wasilah wal-fadilah, wab'athu maqaman mahmudan alladhi wa'adtahu (O Allah, Lord of this perfect call and the prayer to be offered, grant Muhammad the privilege (of interceding) and also the eminence, and resurrect him to the praised position that you have promised),' will be granted my intercession on the Day of Resurrection."{Related by Bukhari}. The Prophet also said: " When you hear the Mu'adhdhin, repeat what he says, then invoke a blessing on me, for everyone who invokes a blessing on me will receive ten blessings from Allah; then beg from Allah al-Wasila for me, which is a rank in Paradise fitting for only one of Allah's servants, and I hope that I may be that one. If anyone who asks that I be given the Wasila, he will be assured of my intercession. "{related by Muslim}. Moreover, Muslim scholars are of the view that it is recommended to repeat the words of the Athaan and the Iqaama. " The well-known view in our school, Shafii, is that it is recommended for whoever hears the Iqaama to repeat its words."{Moghni Al-Mohtaj, a Shafii book}. In addition, "It is recommended for whoever hears the Iqaama to repeat its words after the Mo`athin."{Al-Moghni, a Hanbali book}. In conclusion, it is recommended for the one who hears the Athaan and the Iqaama to repeat their words then say the supplication (O Allah, Lord of this perfect call and the prayer to be offered, grant Muhammad the privilege (of interceding) and also the eminence, and resurrect him to the praised position that you have promised). And Allah knows best.
