Question :
What is the Islamic ruling on having multiple Imams lead the funeral prayer for a deceased person as a form of honoring them and seeking blessings from the imams who lead the prayer?
The Answer :
All perfect praise be to Allah the Lord of the Worlds. May His peace and blessings be upon Prophet Mohammad and upon all his family and companions.
The funeral prayer (Salat Al-Janazah) is classified as a communal obligation (Fard Kifayah), meaning if some members of the community fulfill it, the obligation is lifted from the rest. This is based on the statement of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH): "Whoever prays over a deceased person will receive a Qirat of reward, and whoever attends the burial will receive two Qirats. One Qirat is equivalent to (the size of) Mount Uhud." [Agreed upon].
It is not recommended for someone who has already performed the funeral prayer, whether individually or in a group, to repeat it. However, if they do repeat it, the prayer is valid and considered as voluntary (Nafl). Imam Al-Khatib Al-Shirbini (may Allah have mercy on him) said: "Whoever performs the funeral prayer, either individually or in a congregation, does not repeat it, meaning it is not recommended for them to repeat it according to the more correct view, because the funeral prayer cannot be offered as a voluntary prayer. If someone does perform it a second time, their prayer is valid and considered voluntary according to the correct opinion mentioned in Al-Majmou'." [Mughni Al-Muhtaj/Vol.2/P.51]. Similarly, Imam Saeed Ba'ashin (may Allah have mercy on him) said: "It is not recommended to repeat an obligatory or voluntary prayer, other than what has been previously mentioned, nor is it recommended to repeat the funeral prayer." [Bushra Al-Karim/p.330].
In conclusion, it is not recommended to repeat the funeral prayer for someone who has already performed it with a different imam. However, it is permissible to hold multiple congregational prayers for the same deceased person, whereby the attendees are divided into groups, and each group prays with its own imam after the previous group has concluded. And Allah The Almighty Knows Best.
