Question :
I work for a company that provides payment services for traders` financial entitlements by Master and Visa card through their points of sale devices. Is it allowed to install such devices in tourist restaurants that serve alcoholic drinks?
The Answer :
All perfect praise be to Allah the Lord of the Worlds. May Allah`s peace and blessings be upon our Prophet Mohammad and upon all his family and companions.
The ruling of installing points of sale devices for payment by electronic cards is tied with the business`s area of work. If the latter is lawful, installing the devices is lawful as well. However, if the area of work is mostly about selling unlawful things, such as alcoholic drinks, swine, or nightclubbing and the like, then it is unlawful since this is helping in sin and rancour. The proof of this is that Almighty Allah says {What means}: " Help ye one another in righteousness and piety, but help ye not one another in sin and rancour: fear Allah. for Allah is strict in punishment."{Al-Ma`idah, 2}. Nonetheless, if the area of work is a mixture of lawful and unlawful, then the ruling depends on what is most dominant. If the lawful is most dominant, then installing the devices is lawful; if not, then it isn`t. However, to be on the safe side, it is better not to install these devices to avoid falling into confusedness.
As for installing points of sale devices for tourist hotels and restaurants, this is permissible because most of their business is lawful and what is unlawful could be manifested in some products they serve, and those in charge of it incur the sin. And Allah the Almighty knows best.
