Question :
I obtained a university degree in Banking and Financial Sciences in 2008. I haven`t applied for any Riba-based bank, insurance company or finance corporation, because I know that it is Haram (Forbidden) to work there. However, I couldn`t get a job in an Islamic bank although I have applied many times. Six months ago, I got a job as a sales representative for food supplier, but I am about to lose this job because the administration decided to transfer me to another department where I have to carry things and endure a great deal of hardship. Moreover, I am also treated like any other sales rep. who holds primary school certificate. In light of my field of study, is it permissible for me to work in a Riba-based bank or an insurance company with the intention of leaving such job once I manage to get one in an Islamic institution and under the condition that I do not work in any department that directly deals with usury. In addition, does the ruling of Sharia on working for Riba-based banks apply to working for the Central Bank as well?
The Answer :
All perfect praise be to Allah, the Lord of the Worlds; may His blessings and peace be upon our Prophet Mohammad and upon all his family and companions.
If you get a job in a Riba-based bank and that job doesn`t directly deal with Riba (Usury/interest)-a security guard or chief of personnel-then We (Iftaa` Department) pray that Allah doesn`t hold you accountable for that because such a job doesn`t directly help in Riba-based transactions.
Moreover, the Central Bank is the state`s treasury and deals with Riba. If your work in this institution involves dealing with Riba directly, then We hope that Allah doesn`t hold you liable for that, but We recommend that you look for another job to avoid this suspicious line of work. And Allah The Almighty Knows Best.
