Question :
Is the daughter who receives a salary obliged to provide for her father?
The Answer :
Praise be to Allah the Lord of the Worlds. May His peace and blessings be upon our Prophet Mohammad and upon all his family and companions.
Scholars of Islamic Sharia are agreed that the father should spend from that which he earns with his own hands if it suffices for his basic needs. However, if he is poor or doesn`t have enough money to cover these needs, then his children are obliged to provide for him.
Al-Shirbini (May Allah have mercy on his soul) said {what means}: "A person (Male or female) is obliged to provide for his parents and children." The evidence on this is that Allah The Almighty Says {what means}: "yet bear them company in this life with justice (and consideration)," {Luqman, 15}. Moreover, the Messenger of Allah said: "The best (most pure) food that a man eats is that which he has earned himself, and his child (and his child's wealth) is part of his earning." {At-Tirmith}.
Ibn al-Monther stated: "Jurists are agreed that children are obliged to provide for their parents who have no source of income and the same applies to their grandparents." {Moghni al-Mohtaaj, Vol.15:P.61}.
In addition, this ruling is reiterated in article (197) of the Jordanian Personal Status Law/2010, where it reads: "The solvent son or daughter, young or old is obliged to provide for his/her parents, even if the latter are able to make a living." And Allah The Almighty Knows Best.
