The Fatwa Department of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan was founded in 1921. Since its formation, it has relied upon Hanafi fatwas which were in use during the Ottoman era, and the Mufti has answered the questions of members of the public, whether they relate to worship or financial transactions or personal statutes, and it has assigned a mufti to each judge in cities both large and small. Yes, it is permissible to perform Umrah after the latest expansion of the Sa`y area since Sa`y between As-Safa and Al- Marwah is observed.

It was found out that a man divorced his wife for the third time in 2005, but they continued cohabiting as man and wife. However, when they realized that what they were doing was unlawful, they came the Iftaa` Department in 2009 and were told that they can`t be together. What is the position of Sharia on this couple?

All perfect praise be to Allah the Lord of the Worlds. May His peace and blessings be upon Prophet Mohammad and upon all his family and companions.

Her Iddah* period starts after the third divorce. As for the continued cohabitation, it is unlawful because being ignorant about the rulings of Sharia while in Dar Al-Islam* is no valid excuse. If a baby came as the fruit of this unlawful consummation of marriage, then a judge of Sharia has the final say in this regard because lineage is a serious matter. And Allah The Almighty Knows Best.

* ʿIddah: a specified period of time that must elapse before a Muslim widow or divorcee may legitimately remarry. The Qurʾān (2:228) prescribes that a menstruating woman have three monthly periods before contracting a new marriage; the required delay for a nonmenstruating woman is three lunar months.

* Dar Al-Islam: designates a territory where Muslims are free to practice their religion, though this often implies the implementation of Islamic law, whereas Dar al-Harb represents those lands ruled by non-believers

Statement on Banning Forbidden Festivals

All perfect praise is due to Allah the Lord of the Worlds. May His blessings and peace be upon our Prophet Mohammad, his family and noble companions.

Recently, there has been calls by some media outlets for holding festivals with unlawful names and immoral acts, such as the so called "Wine Festival."

We, Iftaa` Department, stress that calling for, holding and taking part in such festivals violates the teachings of Islam, negates authentic values of Islam and the customs and traditions of this Hashemite country of ours.

We, Iftaa` Department, call on all citizens to boycott these festivals because they corrupt country and people. We also call on the concerned authorities to ban holding such festivals to protect our true religion and the safety of our society.

We also highly appreciate the statement issued by the Ministry of Interior banning such festivals and holding their organizers accountable before the law.

We pray that Allah protects our country against sins, tests and trials, be they concealed or revealed. And all perfect praise be to Allah the Lord of the Worlds.

Is it permissible to single out Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays to make up for missed fasting without fasting a day before ,or after each ?

Yes, it is permissible to make up for missed fasting during the aforesaid days, and it is also valid to offer non-obligatory and vowed fasting as well. However, fasting a day before or after each isn`t obligatory.

Is it a condition that one should offer two sacrifices for a male newborn?

It is desirable to offer two sheep for a male newborn, and one for a female newborn. Offering one sheep for the male newborn is also permissible as it observes the Prophet`s Sunnah in this regard.

I see horrible dreams although I perform the prescribed prayers, what do you make of that?

Be mindful of Allah while awake and he will safeguard you from whatever evil you see while asleep. We advise you to make the pre-sleep supplications. And Allah The Almighty Knows Best.

Is it permissible for a woman to visit the doctor while in her `Iddah(waiting period)?

It is permissible for her to do that during day time, but it is impermissible for her to go out at night except for a sound reason.
