About the General Fatwa Department

The Fatwa Department of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan was founded in 1921. Since its formation, it has relied upon Hanafi fatwas which were in use during the Ottoman era, and the Mufti has answered the questions of members of the public, whether they relate to worship or financial transactions or personal statutes, and it has assigned a mufti to each judge in cities both large and small. My brother is settling a debt on my behalf and in return he takes 30% interest as an additional amount of the whole sum. Is this lawful or not?

This additional amount is considered prohibited interest (Riba) according to Islamic law, and it is not permissible to take it. And Allah Knows Best.

Is it permissible for me to name my newborn baby boy “Al-Moustafa” ?

There is no harm in naming your son “Moustafa” without using the ”Al”.

After buying tires, I made an oath not to buy tires from a person. Afterwards, he offered his entire car for sale. What is the ruling on this?

If you bought the entire car and in order to be on the safe side, you should pay an expiation; feeding 10 poor people and the cost of feeding a person is half a JD. And Allah Knows Best.

Does an internal examination require ghusl?

Ghusl isn't required for making internal examination; however, it invalidates one's fasting. And Allah Knows Best.

Is it permissible for a person to sever ties with his sister because her husband had quit prayer and done him harm?

A sister is a blood-relative and maintaining blood-relations is obligatory in Islam. As regards her husband, he should be invited to the way of Allah with wisdom and beautiful preaching.

Should missed Sunnah prayer be made up?

Making up missed voluntary acts of worship is from Sunnah.

Is prayer nullified by nose bleed?

All praise be to Allah, The Lord of The Worlds. Blood coming out of the nose, or a wound doesn`t nullify prayer regardless of its quantity. And Allah Knows Best.

Although engaged to be married, a man committed adultery with another woman. What is the ruling of Sharia on this?

All perfect praise be to Allah the Lord of the Worlds. May His peace and blessings be upon our Prophet Mohammad and upon all his family and companions.

There is no sin on the woman to whom this man is engaged; however, he is considered a cheater and must receive the punishment prescribed in Sharia. And Allah The Almighty Knows Best.
