Question :

Some people confuse the Holy Sunnah with the customs and traditions that prevailed at the beginning of Islam. What is the dividing line between the two?

The Answer :

Praise be to Allah the Lord of the Worlds.

Scholars of Islamic Law, Sharia, have elaborated on this issue and it is amongst the basics that students of Sharia acquire while earning their degrees. What counts most, here, is the saying of Allah The Almighty in the Noble Quran and what the Prophet Mohammad (PBUH) said, did or approved. The Prophet (PBUH) was familiar with the actions carried out by his people and approved of them.

It is no secret that at the beginning of Islam many customs rested on the legal rulings delivered by the Prophet (PBUH), or the former practices of the Arabs that He (PBUH) approved of because they are good. Some of those are: hospitality, good neighborliness and revering the elderly. And Allah The Almighty Knows Best.
