Question :

What is the ruling on using Hyaluronic Acid which is already being used as a substance in the manufacturing of our medical supplies and registered at JFDA (Jordan Drug & Food Administration) under the name (Restylan)? Noting that the most important uses of our cosmetics, are restoring skin softness and reducing its wrinkles.

The Answer :

All perfect praise be to Allah, The Lord of The Worlds, and may His peace and blessings be upon our Prophet Muhammad and upon all of his family and companions.

Islam recommends people to beautify in their look, dress and in everything, since the Prophet (PBUH) said (What means):" Allah is Beautiful, He loves beauty" [Related by Moslim]. In addition,  one of the companions used to wear a nose of gold after his was cut off as related by Abu-Dawood with a sound chain of narration.

Therefore, there is no harm in using cosmetics that reduce and remove wrinkles and pores as well the ones that regain natural skin color so long as Sharia permits such procedures; yet, no jurist banned such a matter before; rather, jurists urge people to change grayness by dying hair with any other color save with black. As it helps to remove some of ageing effects; thusly, the permissibility of using injections and creams for the latter purpose is more prudent, here, so long as the following conditions are met:

1. The product must be made out of impure substances.

2. No harm is inflicted due to using those cosmetics, because the Prophet (PBUH) said (What means):" There is no injury nor return of injury." [Related by Ibn Majah].

3. Cosmetics shouldn't be used to fraud people.

Finally, the safety of the aforementioned products and their effectiveness are the formal parties' responsibility such as: Ministry of Health and JFDA. And Allah knows best.
