Question :

What are the kinds of Hady offered during Hajj and how many sacrificial animals did the Prophet (PBUH) offer?

The Answer :

All perfect praise be to Allah. Blessings and peace be upon Prophet Mohammad and upon his family and companions.

There are three kinds of Hady ( Sacrificial animal ) in Hajj :

1. The Hady offered by the pilgrim in the Tamattu, or in the Quiraan Hajj. In these forms of Hajj, a pilgrim is obligated to slaughter a Hady, provided that his household isn`t in the precincts of the Sacred Mosque.

2. The Hady of Ihsar (being prevented from completing Hajj). A pilgrim, who was prevented from completing Hajj due to an illness, or an enemy hindered him from going to the Haram, is required to slaughter a Hady from wherever he is, then shave, or trim his head and come out from the state of Ihram. Allah The Almighty says : “And complete the Hajj or ’umra in the service of God. But if ye are prevented (From completing it), send an offering for sacrifice, such as ye may find, and do not shave your heads until the offering reaches the place of sacrifice. And if any of you is ill, or has an ailment in his scalp, (Necessitating shaving), (He should) in compensation either fast, or feed the poor, or offer sacrifice; and when ye are in peaceful conditions (again), if any one wishes to continue the ’Umra on to the Hajj, He must make an offering, such as he can afford, but if he cannot afford it, He should fast three days during the hajj and seven days on his return, Making ten days in all. This is for those whose household is not in (the precincts of) the Sacred Mosque. And fear God, and know that God Is strict in punishment.” {Al-Baqarah/196}.

3. The Hady of Tatawo`(charity Hady). It is from Sunnah that this Hady is given as a charity to the poor people of Mecca. Allah The Almighty says: “The sacrificial camels we have made for you as among the symbols from God: in them is (much) good for you: then pronounce the name of God over them as they line up (for sacrifice): when they are down on their sides (after slaughter), eat ye thereof, and feed such as (beg not but) live in contentment, and such as beg with due humility: thus have We made animals subject to you, that ye may be grateful. It is not their meat nor their blood, that reaches God: it is your piety that reaches Him: He has thus made them subject to you, that ye may glorify God for His Guidance to you and proclaim the good news to all who do right.” {Al-Hajj/36-37}.

During Hijjat Al-Wada`(Farewell pilgrimage which the Prophet offered prior to his passing away), the Prophet (PBUH) brought a hundred sacrificial camels, slaughtered sixty three of them, and Ali Bin Abi Talib slaughtered the rest.

Jabir Bin Abdullah narrated: “ The sacrificial camels that the Prophet slaughtered were a hundred; he slaughtered sixty three with his own hands and Ali slaughtered the rest. “ [Ahmad}. And Allah knows best.
